Less Meetings more mischief - Farewell from Me

Well, here we are. After nearly 18 years of serving this wonderful parish, the time has come for me to hang up my Clerk’s hat (which, for the record, was never particularly stylish). From 14th April 2008 to now, it’s been a journey filled with laughter, learning, frustration and a whole lot of litter picking.

A Journey to Remember
When I started, I had no idea how many hats I’d wear—planner, fixer, listener, occasional dragon polisher (more on that later). But what a ride it’s been!

• We built a new community centre in the north and took on the Conniburrow Centre in the south—ensuring both ends of our parish had places to gather, celebrate, and connect.

• We improved play areas in Downs Barn, Pennyland, Neath Hill and most recently Marsh Drive—because every community needs a space where kids can run wild and grown-ups can pretend they’re not tired.

• We tackled litter like pros—community litter picks, Keep Britain Tidy events, and Love Where You Live campaigns. If there was a crisp packet blowing in the wind, we were on it.

• We added a splash of creativity with the art trails from Willen Park South to Redhouse Park—making your average walk a little less average.

• During Covid, our team became a lifeline—delivering prescriptions and food parcels, powered by the incredible spirit of Trevor Heale (who deserves his own statue, frankly).

• We supported little libraries, tidied up the dragon sculpture and even gave the phone box a glow-up.

And let’s not forget the proudest moment: being recognised as Star Council of the Year—a tribute to the hard work of councillors past and present. Our magazine and comms channels have grown, and so has our voice.
The People Make the Parish
I’ve met hundreds of amazing people—not just councillors, but everyday heroes who care deeply and act boldly. You’ve inspired me, challenged me, and occasionally made me laugh until I snorted tea.
To the volunteers, staff, and councillors: thank you. Your commitment has been the heartbeat of this parish.

What I’ve Learned
This role has taught me more than I ever expected. I’ve given a lot but received even more. I’ve seen the best of community—empathy, generosity, resilience—and yes, sometimes the worst. But the good always outshines the bad, and that’s what kept me going.

Looking Ahead
The parish is in good hands. There’s a brilliant team ready to carry the torch. But remember: community isn’t just about governance or taxes. It’s about heart, mind, and spirit. It needs all of us—yes, even you reading this—to show up, speak up, and muck in.

Farewell (but not goodbye)
Thank you for your support, your kindness, and your trust. I’ll always treasure my time as Parish Clerk. And while I may be stepping down, I’ll never stop cheering for this incredible community.
Here’s to the next chapter—for me, and for all of us.
Warmest wishes,
Eirwen
