Last month, the Great Linford Parish Council team, including staff and councillors, stepped away from their desks and ventured outdoors for a community litter-picking session in Giffard Park and Blakelands.
Armed with gloves, bags, and pickers, they worked together to tidy up these well-loved local areas. Lisa, our Communications Officer, brought her camera along to document the day and share the experience with the community.
“It was so lovely to be out,” Lisa said. “I was surprised by the amount of alcohol litter—lots of cans and bottles. We walked around Tongwell Lake, which was stunning in the sunshine.”
Tommy Hayes, our Community Liaison Officer, also joined the effort and shared insight into why litter collection matters, especially around areas like Tongwell Lake, which are valuable habitats for local wildlife.

He reminded everyone that the area now falls under a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), a measure in place to address antisocial behaviour related to alcohol. Under this PSPO, it’s now an offence to consume alcohol in designated areas if instructed otherwise by a police or authorised officer, providing a crucial step toward ensuring these public spaces remain safe, clean, and welcoming.

The day would not have been as successful without the help of our dedicated councillors and staff. A huge thank you to everyone who participated, including Cllr Sandra Trew, Cllr Derek Harvey OBE, and Cllr Janet Brindley.

The team’s efforts made a visible difference and underscored the importance of community involvement in keeping our spaces clean and enjoyable for all.

Stay tuned for future litter-picking dates!
